If you live in Lancashire there is a very good chance that you have heard of Parbold Hill. Given its’ lack of inches – this is almost miraculous with it being in the same county as the monoliths Pendle Hill, Bull Hill, Saddleworth Moor and the ubiquitous Winter Hill. Such is Parbold’s reputation. Granted this is one of the few hills in Lancashire that has both a monument (the Bottle) and an A-road all the way up to and over its’ summit. It’s hard to get a decent photograph of this hill one has to be almost one top of it in order to see the thing and many, many times the eye is diverted to other loftier neighbouring climbs. Yet the reputation persists!

The beacon once formed part of a relay league stretching from Everton Brow above Liverpool to Lancaster Castle, which was in place (though unused) during the Anglo–Spanish War of 1585. It has been said that if Hills were dogs then Parbold would be a terrier – small yet surprisingly tough.
